Why I Am Wiccan
written in 1996

Even as a young child, I was interested in the occult. I was always putting books about spells or magic or ESP on my Christmas list. I never got them, but they were there. I think I even claimed I was a Witch to my sister when I was about 11. When I was in fifth grade I began to wonder why no one worshipped the ancient Gods and Goddesses anymore. It seemed to me that they couldn't have just gone away, if they had existed once, they must still exist. I continued to study these myths through the years.

I first "officially" discovered Wicca back in late 1991, when I was 18. I found a book by Scott Cunningham called Wicca for the Solitary Practitioner. As I read it, I realized that this was what I believed and just didn't have a name for. About two years later, I moved to Los Angeles. I had just started to come out of the "broomcloset" back then. I still kept it a secret from a lot of people. Then in February of last year, I joined Willow Lodge and ever since then I have been very open about my beliefs (obviously, since you're reading about them on this page.)

I find that as time goes by I am more and more willing to remain out of the broomcloset and feel the need to hide my beliefs and practices from fewer people. There are still some places where I am not totally open, but those are diminishing. I have also found myself getting more into educating others and sharing my beliefs with others. I think this is a natural progression for those along this path. Ultimately we all become teachers. For some reason I never realized how much I knew and how much I had to share with others until newcomers started coming to me and asking for help. It clarified things I guess.

I don't know exactly where this path will take me, but I'm looking forward to the journey. And along that road, I've discovered some Keys to Life that I'd like to share with you.
