Latest Tip

With the new year many of us make resolutions or at least vow to make a new start. No matter whether the goal is an exercise regime, a cleaner house, or a better relationship, there’s just something about January 1 that prompts us to improve our lives.

Unfortunately most New Year’s Resolutions expire by January 2, but studies have shown that a resolution made on a day other than January 1 has a much higher chance of being kept. With that in mind, it’s time for January 7 resolutions. Why January 7? Why not? It’s the end of the week, so that gives you the whole weekend to practice keeping your resolution, to get into the habit as it were. Plus, Friday is a good day for most people. It’s much easier to be good to yourself on a happy Friday than it is on an annoying Monday. This Friday has the added bonus of the moon passing through Sagittarius, a sign that encourages enthusiasm and self-improvement.

Before Friday, sit down and think of your resolutions. What do you want for yourself? What do you and your partner want together? What do you want for your partner? Make a list of your goals for the coming year and whittle it down to three you can work towards: one for you, one for your partner, and one for the two of you together. Use the following ritual to boost your chances of success.

Singles: you can still use this ritual, just make a resolution for yourself and a resolution for the relationship you want.

RELATIONSHIP RITUAL: Resolution Ritual

What you will need:
orange candle
3 candles in colors appropriate to your resolutions
3 strips of parchment paper
3 pens in colors appropriate to your resolutions
fire-resistant container

  1. Create sacred space by casting a circle or quietly meditating.
  2. Invoke the goddess by saying,
“Lady of light, Lady of darkness
Please join us on this winter night.
We come before you ready to improve our lives.
Lend us your energy and blessings
As we state our resolutions for the next year.”
  3. Light the two candles that match your personal resolutions. Write your resolutions on the parchment. Now hold the parchment in your hands and envision keeping your resolutions. How do you feel? What is it like? Once you have your vision firmly in mind, light the parchment in the candle flame and drop it in the bowl to burn away.
  4. Light the candle for your joint goal. Write your joint resolution on the parchment. Hold it between you and envision how you will keep the resolution together and how it will benefit both of you. When your vision is firm, say “so mote it be.” When your partner is also done, light the parchment from the candle and drop it into the bowl.
  5. When all the parchment strips have burned away, say,
“Lady of light, Lady of darkness,
We offer these resolutions to you.
Please send us your aid and energy
So that we make keep our promises
    To each other and ourselves.”
  6. Light the orange candle. Say,
“We light this candle to ensure our success.
    We will keep our resolutions
    For ourselves and our relationship.
An it harm none, so mote it be.”
  7. Release the goddess. Say,
“Lady of light, Lady of darkness
    Thank you for joining us
And assisting us in our rite.
Stay if you will, go if you must.
    Farewell and blessed be.”
  8. Extinguish the candles.
  9. Release the circle.
  10. Relight the candles for 15 minutes every night until they have burned all the way down.

May the Lady bless you with love and happiness for all your days.
